House passes amended bill on loud car stereos
The House of Representatives approved a measure designed to curb loud car
radios on Tuesday, but it needs to go back to the Senate for consideration
of amendments. Drivers could be fined up to $500 if a car radio can be heard
"plainly" at a distance of 50 feet or more. One House amendment
established that police have to give drivers a warning before they are issued
a summons. A second amendment exempted the city of Wilmington from the law.
Rep. Dennis P. Williams, D-Wilmington North, who sponsored the Wilmington
change, said the city's noise laws already are more stringent than the proposed
state law.
